UMPIRES HUB

Welcome to Umpiring at CBN Hockey Club

Our umpires are the backbone of our sport, and at CBN Hockey Club, we are fortunate to have a fantastic group of dedicated umpires who give up their time to help players enjoy the game. However, we are always looking to recruit more umpires and develop the skills of our existing ones.

We’re here to support you in developing your umpiring skills, understanding the formalities of umpiring, and providing you with additional learning resources.

At CBN HC, we encourage everyone to practice umpiring because every hockey game requires two umpires, and the more competent the umpire, the more enjoyable the game will be for everyone involved.

The following sections provide information suitable for everyone—players, coaches, parents, juniors, and seniors alike—whether you're looking to gain a better understanding of the rules of hockey or considering starting your journey as an umpire. Whatever your motivation, you can begin your involvement right here!

How to Get Started

If you are new to umpiring or have limited experience, your first step should be to complete the England Hockey (EH) Online Rules and an Introduction to Umpiring Course. This will provide you with a solid foundation in umpiring and equip you with the skills and confidence needed to umpire effectively.

Create your own learning profile on the Hockey Hub and sign up.

On the Hub site, click ‘UMPIRE’, where you can choose from a range of resources, including:

  • Rules of Hockey
  • You’re the Umpire: A series of videos to watch and learn from.
  • Umpire Development Modules: These modules cover various aspects of umpiring, such as:
  • Decision communication
  • Umpiring the aerial ball
  • Umpiring stick tackles
  • Umpiring foul play
  • Umpiring attacking free hits

While the England Hockey material mentioned above is very informative, it often uses international games as examples, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. Don’t be discouraged—most club-level games are not played at this pace or level of skill. In fact, 99% of games are much more accessible and are a great way to start your umpiring journey. These resources will still be valuable as they provide interesting discussion points and help build your understanding of the game.

We look forward to seeing you develop as an umpire and contribute to making the game enjoyable for everyone!

Wherever you might be in terms of your knowledge and understanding of the rules of hockey and umpiring there are people in the Club only too happy to help

The England Hockey Disrepute Regulations and the Red Card Regulations have been updated. The new regulations came into force on 1 September 2024 and apply to any Red Card or Misconduct offences committed on or after that date. You must use the Disciplinary Regulations and the updated forms when reporting either a Red Card or Misconduct Offence after that date. You can find all the information you need, including the new England Hockey Disciplinary Regulations and forms, see the below link
